Port Townsend, WA -   In 1997, filmmaker Josh Tickell set out on the road with a “Veggie Van” and a video camera and began filming what would eventually become known as FUEL. Over the course of his 11 year journey, Tickell traveled to over 25 countries, authored two books, founded a nonprofit organization, and participated in jump-starting America’s green energy movement.  As it chronicles one man’s personal journey to try to change the world for the better, in the process the film empowers and inspires each individual to rise to the challenge and to do their own personal best to contribute in any way they can to help save the environment and the world we are passing on to our children.
FUEL will be shown at the Rose Theater for one day only on Saturday, June 6th at noon.

FUEL is in insightful portrait of America’s addiction to oil and an uplifting testament to the immediacy of new energy solutions.  Director Josh Tickell, a young activist, shuttles us on a whirlwind journey to track the rising domination of the petrochemical industry – from Rockefeller’s strategy to halt Ford’s first ethanol cars to Vice President Cheney’s petrochemical company sponsored energy legislation – and reveals a gamut of available solutions to “repower America” – from vertical farms that occupy skyscrapers to algae facilities that turn wastewater into fuel.  Tickell and a surprising array of environmentalists, policy makers, and entertainment notables take us through America’s complicated, often ignominious energy past and illuminate a hopeful, achievable future, where decentralized, sustainable living is not only possible, it’s imperative.   Watch the trailer at www.thefuelfilm.com.

Nominated for the 2009 Writers Guild Award for Best Documentary Screenplay and Winner of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, the film features an all-star cast and interviews with leading voices ranging from our nation’s leaders to Hollywood celebrities.

The special showing of FUEL is sponsored by Power Trip Energy, Port Townsend’s solar PV installation company.  Earlier this year Andy Cochrane, president of Power Trip Energy attended a screening of Fuel in Olympia and participated in a panel discussion with Jay Inslee in front of the movie audience.  “I was really impressed by the power of this movie and the audience dialogue it generated.  This is the right time to be discussing our energy future and the role renewables will play.”  There will be a panel discussion after the June 6th showing of Fuel.  Tickets for FUEL are available at the Rose Theater box office.

Power Trip Energy Offers “Spin Your Meter Backwards!” Grid Tied Solar Workshop on Saturday, January 31st in Silverdale, WA

Andy Cochrane, president of Power Trip Energy Corp of Port Townsend, will offer a free two hour workshop on solar grid-tied electricity on Saturday, January 31, from 12-2 pm in Silverdale  The event will take place at the Silverdale Community Center at 9729 Silverdale Way NW.

Cochrane, who has given many presentations on solar power on the Olympic Peninsula over the past few years, reports that this presentation will include significant new information.  The new federal solar tax credits will be covered as well as the current status of the Washington state production incentives.  Financing programs will be discussed as well as the availability of new solar products, including thin film PV modules and micro-inverters.

Renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, is considered by many to be an important resource to address our country’s rising energy needs while also reducing our global warming impacts.  But does solar power make sense in the “rainy” northwest?  “That is a question we get all the time,” responds Cochrane.  “Western Washington receives more sunshine on average than Germany, the world’s leader in solar power installations.  There is enough sun here for our forests to have the largest and fastest growing trees in the county.  This is where we live and there is plenty of sun for solar installation to make a lot of sense.”

Power Trip Energy Offers “Spin Your Meter Backwards!” Grid Tied Solar Workshop on Saturday, November 22nd
Posted November 14, 2008

Andy Cochrane, president of Power Trip Energy Corp of Port Townsend, will offer a free two hour workshop on solar grid-tied electricity on Saturday, November 22, from 1 – 3 pm in Port Townsend.  The event will take place at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St. (corner of Lawrence and Tyler Streets) in uptown Port Townsend.

Cochrane will also be announcing the formation of their Apollo Club, wherein members share the goals of providing 100% of their electricity within 10 years, and will share energy conservation tips, performance tracking and success stories.

Renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, is considered by many to be an important resource to address our country’s rising energy needs while also reducing our global warming impacts.  But does solar power make sense in the “rainy” northwest?  “That is a question we get all the time,” responds Cochrane.  “The north Olympic Peninsula, receives more sunshine on average than Germany, the world’s leader in solar power installations.  It works just fine here.”

Areas around Sequim, Port Townsend, and Port Angeles in the rain shadow of the Olympics are ideally suited for solar power and have some of the highest concentrations of installed solar electric systems in the state.  “We have 58 grid tied PV (photo voltaic) systems installed in Jefferson County and 46 in Clallam County,” stated Cochrane.  “We’ve got about 1.5% of the state’s population and about 15% of the installed PV systems in the state.  We don’t just have a great solar resource; we are showing the rest of the state how it’s done.”

Jefferson County Solar Home Tour Set for Saturday July 12th
Posted May 15, 2008

You've been waiting for it and this year it is coming early, just in time for sunny Summer weather.  This year's Jefferson County solar home tour is scheduled for Saturday, July 12th at various locations throughout Jefferson County.  The Solar Tour offers an excellent opportunity for those interested in solar power to learn about it first hand from folks who own their own solar PV and solar thermal systems.  Solar powered and energy efficient homes in Port Townsend and Jefferson County will be part of the tour as well as educational presentations about solar energy and designing solar ready homes.  The tour offers local residents an opportunity to find out how their neighbors are trimming their energy bills, increasing their energy independence and taking steps to address global warming.

Residents in Jefferson County have been quick to jump on the renewable energy bandwagon.  To date there are 45 grid-tied solar electric (PV) systems installed in Jefferson County including 38 in the Port Townsend, 98368 zip code.  The reasons for this local surge in solar power include excellent financial incentives adopted by Washington State as well as federal income tax credits available to homeowners and businesses.  An additional factor is that local electrical contracting firms and solar consultants are located here in Jefferson County, ready to serve those interested in crafting their own solar destiny.  And lastly and perhaps most importantly, we have great amounts of sunshine here in east Jefferson County as well as great residents who want to turn that sunshine into energy and dollars.

Tour Location:  The kick-off tour location will be at 2343 Thomas Street (off Hastings Ave) in Port Townsend at the Power Trip Energy shop. Presentations on grid tied solar electric systems and solar thermal (hot water) systems will be offered.  Maps of tour locations will also be available.

Tour Time:  10 a.m. - 4 pm.

For More Information ContactJeff Randall, 360-301-9019, email: jeffr@powertripenergy.com, web site:  www.powertripenergy.com.

Tour Fee: This event is free.

How to Take the Tour:  Participants will drive (or bike) to various tour locations on their own.

Solar Ribbon Cutting Planned for High School
Posted January 29, 2008

If you are a freshman science student at Port Townsend High School, you will soon be learning firsthand about renewable energy.  The school’s new 1.02 kW grid tied solar system, the first publicly owned solar power system in Jefferson County, will become operational at a ribbon cutting event on Wednesday, February 6th at 11 am at the high school gymnasium.  Interested members of the public are welcome to attend this event which is planned to be outside, weather permitting.

The photovoltaic, or “PV” array was made possible through a Solar 4R Schools grant from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Puget Sound Energy.  The system was installed by Power Trip Energy, Corp. of Port Townsend.   The Solar 4R Schools program educates students and teachers on the functions and benefits of solar electric power, an increasingly popular renewable resource. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school's solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses the web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to provide students with a comprehensive, interactive learning experience. Power generated by the solar array will feed into the gym’s electrical system and the data monitoring system will transmit weather and solar production data to the internet.  This information will be viewable on a computer kiosk in the gym as well as through the school’s web site.

Shown:   Steve Carr of Power Trip Energy makes some final adjustments to the Port Townsend High School’s new solar array.
